ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The crosstalk between the ubiquitin-proteasome and the immune system plays an important role in the health and pathogenesis of viral infection. However, there have been few studies of ubiquitin activation in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. METHODS: We investigated the effect of ubiquitination on SARS-CoV-2 infection and patient prognosis by integrating published coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) multi-transcriptome data and bioinformatics methods. RESULTS: The differential expression of COVID-19 samples revealed changed ubiquitination in most solid and hollow organs, and it was activated in lymphatic and other immune tissues. In addition, in the respiratory system of COVID-19 patients, the immune response was mainly focused on the alveoli, and the expression of ubiquitination reflected increasing immune infiltration. Ubiquitination stratification could significantly differentiate patients' prognosis and inflammation levels through the general transcriptional analysis of the peripheral blood of patients with COVID-19. Moreover, high ubiquitination levels were associated with a favourable prognosis, low inflammatory response, and reduced mechanical ventilation and intensive care unit. Moreover, high ubiquitination promoted a beneficial immune response while inhibiting immune damage. Finally, prognostic stratification and biomarker screening based on ubiquitination traits played an important role in clinical management and drug development. CONCLUSION: Ubiquitination characteristics provides new ideas for clinical intervention and prognostic guidance for COVID-19 patients.

ABSTRACT

This study explored the effects of both natural and socio-economic factors, such as city size and healthcare capacity, on the spreading of COVID-19 in China's urban population from January 1 to March 5, 2020. Several statistical models and machine learning methods were used to identify the key determinants of the incidence rate of COVID-19. Based on the interpretable machine learning framework, possible nonlinear relationships between incidences and key impact factors were explored. The results showed that the incidence rate of COVID-19 in cities was influenced by several factors simultaneously. Among the factors, the population inflow rate from Wuhan was the factor that showed the highest correlation coefficient(0.43), followed by the population growth rate(0.38). Population migration size, city size and healthcare capacity were the key influencing factors. Nonlinear relationships existed between the key influencing factors and incidence rates. To be specific, the inflow rate from Wuhan had a S-shaped relationship and reaches an asymptote after 2%;the population density had an approximately linear relationship;the per capita GDP showed an evident inverted U curve with the per capita GDP over 100,000 yuan as the inflection point. City development needs to pay more attention to population density control and economic growth in order to bring more health benefits.

ABSTRACT

The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 has led beach tourism to a complete halt in January 2020, disrupting millions of livelihoods and businesses. Due to the economic importance of beach tourism, many governments reopened tourist beaches after the number of confirmed cases decreased. It is essential to open beaches orderly to meet the needs of tourists, maintain beach's health and restore coastal economy under the new reality. This paper selected Qingdao in China as a case study, drew on a questionnaire survey among beach tourists, summarized the effects of the COVID-19 on beach tourism industry and tourism enterprise, analyzed beach tourists' psychology and behavior, and developed beach management strategy under the ongoing prevention and control of COVID-19. The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic caused severe damage to beach tourism which bases on travel and mobility, and this industry was temporarily suspended. With the changing epidemic situation, beach tourism witnessed a gradual recovery from stagnation to local tourism. Meanwhile, tourism enterprises were hit by the devastating impact of the COVID-19, causing problems such as business reduction, tense cash flow, high operating cost and unclear market prospect. Under the normalization of pandemic prevention, tourists did not have severe fear and anxiety about the pandemic, and placed great importance on the prevention and control measures, emergency measures and pandemic risk level of the beach destination. The pandemic also reshaped the perception and mode of beach tourism. Ecological tourism, travelling with family, and local tourism became the primary choices for tourists. Beach congestion, health status, and the quality of tourism services were the biggest concerns for tourists. Additionally, social media and short video APP became the new marketing channels. Finally, beach management strategies were proposed from the aspects of pandemic prevention and control, emergency management, information communication, tourist management, service management, and environmental management.
